The musical, presented entirely through song by the Narrator, tells the story of Joseph, the favored son. After being sold into slavery by his brothers, he gains favor with Egyptian noble Potiphar but is imprisoned for rejecting Potiphar's wife. While incarcerated, Joseph learns to interpret dreams, which leads him to Pharaoh, who is facing famine. Joseph's insights secure him a position as Pharaoh's advisor and facilitate a reunion with his family.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat features a diverse range of musical styles, including French ballads, country-western, and calypso, along with iconic songs such as "Any Dream Will Do" and "Close Every Door."
