Sunday in the Park With George

THIS TITLE IS LICENSED BY MUSIC THEATRE INTERNATIONAL (MTI).

Based on Georges Seurat's painting, "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte," "Sunday in the Park with George" by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine explores profound themes of life, love, and art creation. This acclaimed musical has received the Pulitzer Prize and garnered ten Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical.

In the lead-up to completing his renowned work, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, Georges Seurat grapples with creating impactful art while navigating a strained relationship with his lover, Dot. Despite facing criticism from the art community, Seurat’s artistic prowess flourishes, even as his romance declines. A century later, his descendant, George, also an artist, experiences burnout and uncertainty about his artistic direction, ultimately discovering inspiration from his ancestor's journey.

A skilled ensemble of vocal performers delivers this complex work that explores the human desire to connect across time. Sunday in the Park with George includes two prominent roles originally portrayed by Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters. The production can be presented in a minimalist style, similar to its initial workshop, or with the opulence of Seurat’s artwork.
